ABOUT LJUBLJANA
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia lies in the center of the country making it an excellent starting point from which you can access any destination in Slovenia in less than two hours. Its position on the crossroads of trading routes was an important characteristic of this area since prehistoric times. Although legends tell us it was founded by the Argonauts on their way to the Adriatic Sea, history recognizes the Roman town of Iulia Aemona, founded exactly 2000 years ago, as the first permanent settlement. The importance of the city grew and declined in the next two millenia and material remains from each period can be easily seen making it a living museum. The castle overlooking Ljubljana and the dragon which also found its way into the Ljubljana coat of arms have become its distinctive symbols.
60.000 university students give the city of 270.000 inhabitants a youthful character and an ISHA-friendly ambiance. Numerous parks, tree-abundant avenues and the green river of Ljubljanica are the perfect places to cool off in the hot summer while visiting one of the greenest capitals of Europe. For those interested in its cultural and historical heritage the architecture and many museums offer a diverse and interesting look at the different epochs of the city which is the only capital in the world that has been completely enclosed by a fortification system during the Italian and later German occupation in the Second World War. Although history was not always kind to Ljubljana the diverse nightlife in clubs, pubs and an entire alternative-oriented section located on Metelkova street prove that people in Ljubljana were always in search of good and varied fun. Join us and bring your ISHA spirit to the ISHA capital of this summer, Ljubljana! |

ABOUT sLOVEnia
Although small in size of 20.000 square kilometers and with a tiny population of 2 million inhabitants Slovenia is defined by its remarkable adversity. It stems from a unique geographical position between four major geographic units: The Alps, the Dinaric Alps, the Pannonian Plain and the Mediterranean. It is also a focal point of four different language groups: The Slavic, Germanic, Romance and Hungarian.
Throughout history it has been controlled and desired by many centers of power due to its position on the crossroads of various trade routes which are still outlined in the star-shaped form of its capital Ljubljana. Slovenia gained independence in 1991 but the building of national identity in the imagery of Slovenians stretches beyond the national declaration movement in the 19th century and first vernacular books of the protestant scholars of the 16th century to the waves of Slavic migration some 1500 years ago. Slovenian nature, cuisine, architecture ad culture are as its history intertwined by elements from its neighbouring countries. Still some of it like the rolled pastry called potica and the endemic Human fish are unique. Slovenians are also known for their excellence and willingness to push boundaries, whether in sports like basketball player Goran Dragić, skier Tina Maze and swimmer Martin Strel, in music like Laibach, Terra Folk and Perpetuum jazzile or in their philosophical beliefs like Slavoj Žižek. Slovenia also holds the record for the world's biggest rake but ISHA Ljubljana would like to set one more - organizing the best ISHA seminar. Join us and together we can discover Slovenia in a week filled with experiences that will put this small piece of land on the sunny side of the Alps on the sunny side of your memories. |
